We are looking for a female cantor to assist in our weekly Sunday services. The successful cantor makes the assembly's prayer possible through song. The cantor’s responsibilities are to:

  • Sing a wide variety of genres of sacred music, with an emphasis on both traditional and contemporary gospel;

  • Display strong musical ability, including improvisational skills;

  • Be a presence within the music ministries and the parish community;

  • And be available for the following: Holy Days and special Masses, which include but are not limited to Christmas Eve and Day, Holy Week, the Triduum, and Resurrection Sunday; parish celebrations, including the Sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation and other special events; and weddings and funerals (as scheduled).

The requirements for this cantor position include:

  • She must be available for the 9:00 AM 11:00 AM Mass on Sundays, as needed (call time at 8:15 AM for rehearsal and preparation with the Director of Music Ministries);

  • She will be required to attend certain rehearsals from time to time around Christmas and Easter;

  • She is encouraged to attend our weekly Tuesday rehearsals (from 7:00 PM until 8:00 PM) but is not required;

  • She must dress in order to reflect dignity and professionalism.

  • She must demonstrate full mastery of the music (which is available well in advance), so as to lead the assembly effectively.

  • She must have a certain comfortability with singing in Spanish. Conversational Spanish is not necessary but encouraged.

Cantors are compensated as “Independent Contractors” and will be paid on the day of their service. Compensation for “Special Services” outside of Sunday and Holy Days shall be agreed upon between the cantor and the Director of Music Ministries. St. Francis de Sales offers three internship cycles: Fall (September-December), Spring (January-April), and Summer (May-August) located at our parish office at 135 East 96th Street. We require two days/week, but are flexible with the exact schedule. A minimum of 15 hours per week is required. Internships are unpaid.


This internship will give you plenty of hands-on experience in advocacy and digital marketing. The communications intern will have two main duties. First, they will assist in creating a dynamic social media presence, produce multimedia material, and manage web content. Second, they will research social justice issues online with the purpose of sharing relevant information through our social media channels and assisting current ministries with their work. If you want to work on something specific, or learn particular new skills, we can get that in. You’ll report to Lydia Serrano, Digital Ministry Coordinator.

  • Excellent grammar and copyediting skills

  • Organized and self-motivated

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop and InDesign a plus
