Director of Music Ministry

  • minimum 5 years professional musical experience in New York City

  • must have in-depth knowledge of Catholic mass settings

  • strong Gospel background highly recommended

Job Description
The Director of Music Ministry position is a year-round part-time position. The DMM reports directly to the Pastor and Pastoral Associate and collaborates closely with the parish pastoral staff.

The goals for the Director of Music Ministry are:

  • to foster a prayerful, singing assembly through celebration, preparation, and evaluation built upon continuing education and personal ministry and vocation

  • with the cooperation and assistance of all the parish ministers, the Director of Music Ministry will support the gospel message through song and challenge the assembly to live it more fully

  • to develop a plan to expand participation in all Music Ministries including Liturgical Choirs (Adult/Children/Family) and instrumentalists

  • to enhance the reflective and prayerful execution of instrumental and choral/solo musical   selections

  • to further develop the community’s diverse musical repertoire with an emphasis on the Gospel genre as expressed in publications such as Lead Me Guide Me

Duties

  • The Director of Music Ministry will be responsible for all music associated with worship at the 5:00PM (Vigil) on Saturdays; & 9:00AM and 11:00AM Liturgies on Sundays

  • Coordinate and schedule all musicians (Cantor/Choir/Instrumentalists) and ensure quality of musical performance

  • Weekly rehearsals with Adult Choir (currently Tuesday from 7 – 8:30pm) and coordination with the Director of Religious Education to plan Children’s Choir and Family Choir Rehearsals as necessary

  • Designing weekly, seasonal, and/or special occasion worship aids

  • Recruit, arrange, and coordinate special volunteer musicians for Christmas and Holy Week/Easter celebrations, as well as conduct rehearsals and arrange music as necessary for these musicians

  • Provides a visible, accessible presence at parish events and demonstrates an interest  and concern for the tastes and faith expressions of parishioners

  • Attend pastoral staff meetings (weekly)

  • Other duties as deemed appropriate and necessary by the pastor

 Job-Specific Requirements

Any musician at St. Francis De Sales must:

  • Display strong musical ability including improvisational skills

  • Be able to direct and accompany soloists and choir in a wide variety of genres of Sacred Music

  • Participate in the overall good of the Music Ministry and parish community by being present at important parish events

  • Be available for Holy Days and Special Masses including: Christmas Eve and/or Day, Holy Week (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil, Easter Sunday), Parish celebration of the Sacraments of 1st Communion and Confirmation, Weddings and Funerals (as scheduled)

Spanish Music Ministry Coordinator

The Spanish Music Ministry Coordinator position is a part-time position twelve months of the year. The SMMC reports directly to the Music Director and collaborates closely with the Pastor and parish pastoral staff.

The goals for the Spanish Music Ministry Coordinator will be:

  • to develop a prayerful, singing assembly through celebration, preparation, and evaluation and through education and personal ministry

  • to support the gospel message through song and challenge the assembly to live it more fully, with the cooperation and assistance of all the parish ministers

The goals for the program of the Spanish Music Ministry will be:

  • to build and sustain congregational song at the 12:30PM Sunday Mass in Spanish

  • to help to increase regular attendance at these liturgies through the quality of music

  • to develop a plan to expand participation in all music ministries including liturgical choir and instrumentalists

  • to foster active participation at the liturgy through congregational singing and reflective, prayerful execution of instrumental and choral/solo musical selections

Duties and Responsibilities

  • responsible for all music associated with worship at the 12:30PM Sunday Mass in Spanish

  • coordinate all musicians (guitar, bass, wind instruments, etc.) and ensure quality of musical performance

  • rehearse weekly with liturgical choir (currently Sundays, 10:30AM-12:00PM)

  • design weekly, seasonal, and/or special occasion worship aids, including any additional music not found in the parish hymnal as needed

  • recruit, arrange, and coordinate special volunteer musicians for Christmas and Holy Week/Easter celebrations, as well as conduct rehearsals and arrange music as necessary for these musicians.

  • provides a visible, accessible presence at parish events and demonstrate an interest and concern for the tastes and faith expressions of parishioners

  • other duties as deemed appropriate and necessary by the pastor.

  • responsible to attend the Music Ministry staff meeting (quarterly)

Job-Specific Requirements

  • Dress should reflect dignity and professionalism

    • Men – A coat and tie are recommended at all Liturgies and required at funerals, weddings, Christmas, and Holy Week

    • Women – professional/business attire

  • Any musician at St. Francis De Sales must:

    • display strong musical ability including improvisational skills

    • be able to sing a wide variety of genres of sacred music

    • participate in the overall good of the Music Ministry and parish community by being present at important parish events

Compensation

  • This position is paid on the day of service as an “independent contractor.” If you sing on Sunday, you will be paid on Sunday.

  • Compensation for “special services” outside of Sunday and Holy Days shall be agreed upon by the Spanish Music Ministry Coordinator and the Music Director.

  • Compensation shall be agreed upon by the Spanish Music Ministry Coordinator, Music Director, and Pastor.

STUDENT INTERNSHIPS

St. Francis de Sales offers three internship cycles: Fall (September-December), Spring (January-April), and Summer (May-August) located at our parish office at 135 East 96th Street. We require two days/week, but are flexible with the exact schedule. A minimum of 15 hours per week is required. Internships are unpaid.

COMMUNICATIONS INTERN

This internship will give you plenty of hands-on experience in advocacy and digital marketing. The communications intern will have two main duties. First, they will assist in creating a dynamic social media presence, produce multimedia material, and manage web content. Second, they will research social justice issues online with the purpose of sharing relevant information through our social media channels and assisting current ministries with their work. If you want to work on something specific, or learn particular new skills, we can get that in. You’ll report to Lydia Serrano, Digital Ministry Coordinator.

Qualifications:

  • Comfort with social media

  • Excellent grammar and copyediting skills

  • Organized and self-motivated

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop and InDesign a plus
